Abuela, you will always hold a special place in my heart. Growing up I learned of the life you lived and the sacrifices you made for your family. You showed me what it meant to be strong and loving.
I remember when I first learned to sew you were so excited to see what I made. I remember the joy and smiles on your face when dad and I came over so I can try on all the clothes I made to show you. I felt inspired knowing it was a talent I got from you, along with a love for pictures. You took pictures of so many moments and captured them forever so that we can always look back on them and smile and laugh and remember everything that happened.
I will always be your “Gina Bonita” and will miss hearing your voice, stories and laugh when you called every Saturday to check in. I cherish the time I had with you and only wish we could have had more.
I love you.

Thank you for the many stories you told me about how Pepe, Octavio, Rosa growing up and the journey you took for your family. The love you had for your family showed in each story, it’s is because of what you went through that our family grew and I was able to have a life with my wife your granddaughter. I will always cherish the memories of us enjoying kfc and Popeyes together with Gina, talking about your journey from Cuba to Spain and to America. I’m glad you were able to be part of Gina and my wedding one of our favorite photos is us together with you me on one side and gina on the other giving you a kiss on cheek. I hope I live up to the expectations you had of me for taking care of your Gina Bonita. Thank you for love and support you given me and family in the time we been together may you rest in peace abula.

Abuela always spoke and made gestures from the heart. It was explained to me that when she does certain things or says something you might think a bit offensive - it means she liked you and cared about you. She would call regularly and always asked about me, Gio & Amanda, Gina & Peter then her great granddaughter, Alyssa. She loved her family, and her pictures are her proof. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. She had an infinite number of words to visualize and express about her family. She will be forever missed.

After Jose and I were married and Giovanni and Gina were born, her eyes and heart exploded. She loved when they used to call her and say a few words in Spanish. Whenever she babysat for them, she would spoil them with love and food. Every time we were together with Abuela, there were more pictures taken than breaths per minute. She loved clicking away at anything and everything. You would hear “Cheese” before you got out of the car or entered a house. Another passion Abuela had was sewing. She would fix clothes or make shirts for me that were one of a kind. She left a legacy of beautiful pictures, leaving her family with treasured memories – family, flowers, pets, whatever.

I grew up in a home where my parents were born and raised in Italy. I’m aware of the struggles to survive in a new country with limited resources and how hard you had to work to succeed. When I first met Abuela , I thought she was a strong, independent mom who worked and cared for her kids. She instilled manners, respect and pushed her children Octavio, Rosa & Jose to have a strong foundation in education and work ethics. Abuela also wanted them to have a successful life in America – all three of her kids did very well for themselves.

Mom, I am going to miss our Saturday night calls. Every time we started a movie, we all knew it was time for you to call and sure enough the phone would ring. Our calls would start with my “Hola Chica” and you with your “I have nothing to tell you” and then stay on the phone for a good half hour to hour. She would tell me about the cooking shows and what they made. I would tell her of the foods I made, and we would laugh and have a good time bonding over that. If it weren’t for mom, I would not have any idea of the current Spanish Soap dramas and about world events.

Mom always made it a point to ask about her grandchildren Gio and Gina and how they were doing. Then came her great granddaughter Alyssa and would joyfully relive the experience of the many visits from Gio, Amanda, and Alyssa. She would laugh her head off telling me everything Alyssa did and how much she treasured the moments.

Mom kept the film industry alive by the number of pictures she would take! Any time there was a family gathering the camera was in hand. Even just going to the buffet she was always taking pictures. She was also not shy about having her picture taken. The famous “Cheese” and then “Click” right after. She loved to capture thousands of family moments, also taking pictures of food and flowers.

My deepest bond with mom was always around cooking and food! As far back as I can remember she was always making great meals for us with very simple ingredients and then came the pictures of the Pernil or Turkey. She taught me not to be afraid and just throw stuff together and see what you get. She never measured anything except the rice, so to this day I rarely measure anything when I cook.

Mami,
I will never forget the trip to Spain.
Going to our apartment at Ventoza 25.
Eating croquetas espanolas.
Coffee and churros for breakfast.
Trips in the morning to Cafe Rodilla.
Palmeras from Cafe La Malaguena.
And for dinner, you always asked for Mariset and me to get you, Jamon Iberico, Chorizo Iberico, two breads and two Spanish Mahou beers.
Love you.

There are not enough words to describe the amount you will be missed by my family and me. I am fortunate to have so many hilarious, loving and caring memories over the years shared with you. From when I was young and you would watch us, or read bed time stories to times when I got older and you would share stories of your life back in Spain or Cuba. I am glad that my daughter, Alyssa got to meet and play with you as well. Amanda and I liked to talk with you on the phone, and find it funny how you would call me but ask for Amanda since you knew I didn’t know much Spanish and then talk for hours with her. I never really learned to speak enough Spanish to talk with you and hold a conversation, I was able to pick up enough to understand what you would say to me. But as the years have gone by my Spanish has got a little better, and I am thankful that these past few years I was able to talk some with you. Some of my favorite memories that I have with you, are the holiday gatherings, laughing at every time you said something that came to mind without ever pausing to filter it, and all the pictures you took, of everything. Because you took so many pictures we are able to see your life’s adventures and all the joy you had along the way. Thank you Abuela for all the extraordinary memories of a lifetime of love.

I remember all the times she would make Spanish rice with bacon or ham and such. And to this day Spanish is very much a comfort food because of her. I remember she was a great cook in general. Although when I was younger I questioned how she made coffee….come to find out as I became an adult, it was literally the best way to make coffe.

Even though swore she hated Casey, the family Lab, I remember got out and she chased him down the street. He would back to her but never to me ever. And then in the house there seemed to be a mutual understanding where he would lay in front of her room but would never dare go in it. Also she would secret feed him breed and snacks because she said he was too skinny.

I remember growing up always grew roses, mainly the red ones but also pink and white. It was really nice to see her garden of roses bloom each year.

I remember as a little kid in the house in Elizabeth, she would take me shopping with her and then she would take me to the pizzeria. Apparently the one day I asked for 2 pies and told her that it’s because I’m too skinny.
